Our School

Our School

Community Montessori School, Inc. (CMS) has served the Lexington-Fayette County area since 1970. CMS uses the methods and principles of education developed by Dr. Maria Montessori that still find support in recent advances in the science of how children learn.

Certifications

As a non-sectarian school, we welcome children of every race, color, religion, ethnicity and national origin. Our school is approved and certified by the Kentucky Department of Education, as well as by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). This means we have achieved, and are held to, the highest standards of excellence with regard to the Montessori philosophy and methods. Our curriculum also maintains state standards established by the State of Kentucky and Kentucky Non-Public Schools Commission, Inc.

Our CMS faculty are trained at an Association Montessori Internationale endorsed (AMI) training center where they complete intense training which gives them the necessary direction to accommodate the individual needs of the child, the skills to manage a multi-level age group within the classroom environment, and the knowledge of the developmental stages and sensitive periods of growth of the students. The Montessori materials, in combination with guide expertise, are the essential keys to the success of the classroom. Guides also engage in ongoing professional development through various conferences and courses to stay abreast of the latest developments in pedagogy. Administrators are trained through AMI as well as the Whole School Leadership Institute.

Our staff is committed to the growth and development of the individual child through the implementation of Montessori methodology, as evidenced by our staff charter: "We, the staff of Community Montessori School, will strive toward the ideals embodied in our mission for the good of our children and community. We will do our best each day to nurture a culture with grace and courtesy, in which all the members of our community feel respected, supported, and connected to our guiding values. Our individual commitment to the child will be the compass with which we navigate each day."

“The child, who is the greatest observer of nature undoubtedly, needs to have placed at his disposal material on which to work."
